About the position: CDHY is seeking to fill substitute Teacher of the Deaf positions. These positions provide instruction coverage for teachers who are absent using class lesson planning.
Duties:
Follow lesson plans provided by the regular Teacher to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience for students.
Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions, and maintain a positive learning environment.
Adapt teaching methods to fit the needs of each individual student.
Supervise students in and out of the classroom, including in the halls, on the playground, and in the cafeteria.
Provide in-class and at-home assignments based on the available lesson plan.
For long-term substitutes: develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with the regular teacher’s past lesson plans.
Qualifications:
BA or MA degree focused on Deaf Education.
Valid Washington state substitute teaching certification or ability to obtain certification is required.
Fluency in both American Sign Language (ASL) and written English.
Ability to demonstrate cultural competency within deaf and hard of hearing environments.
Experience working with students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
Ability to communicate effectively with students, school staff, parents, and school district personnel using ASL and English.
Ability to provide instruction for grades Pre-K through 12th grade.
Ability and willingness to adapt instruction as needed.
Demonstrated proficiency using technology (i.e. laptop, tablets, etc.).
Knowledge of current best practices in education.

Must have valid Washington state substitute teaching certification to teach prior to beginning work.
This position is represented by the Washington Public Employees Association (WPEA).

Salary information:
Substitute teachers are paid $28 per hour.
